Brazil, 1977: During the exuberant carnival week, Marcelo (Wagner Moura), a man in his mid-forties, returns from São Paulo to the coastal city of Recife. There, he hopes to see his son again. But his arrival does not go unnoticed – amidst the celebrating crowds and omnipresent violence, Marcelo becomes entangled in an increasingly tight web of surveillance, corruption, and mistrust from which there is no escape. What begins as a personal journey evolves into a dangerous game in the shadow of the military dictatorship.
THE SECRET AGENT celebrated its world premiere in competition at the 78th Cannes International Film Festival and was awarded four major international prizes: two Golden Palms – for Best Actor and Best Director – as well as the “Critics’ Prize” (FIPRESCI) and the Independent Cinema Award (CICAE). Lead actor Wagner Moura (Narcos) received the Best Actor award in Cannes for his powerful portrayal of Marcelo. He stars alongside Maria Fernanda Cândido (The Traitor – As a Crown Witness Against the Cosa Nostra), Gabriel Leone (Netflix series Senna), Hermila Guedes (Suely’s Sky), and Udo Kier (Melancholia).
THE SECRET AGENT is an international co-production by Cinemascópio (Brazil), mk2 Productions (France), One Two Films (Germany), and Lemming Film (Netherlands), supported among others by Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg and the FFA. The German distribution is handled by PORT AU PRINCE PICTURES.
