The Palestinian-Syrian teenager Nasser and his older brother Yassin have been living in a Greek refugee camp for years, waiting for a decision on their asylum application. They pass the time by recording comedy sketches, dreaming of zombie movies, and imagining a future in Sweden. But the longer the standstill lasts, the more Nasser feels trapped in a hopeless dead end. The increasing tensions in the camp eventually push him into another, surreal-looking fantasy world.

Here’s the English translation of the text:

Inspired by the real experiences of refugees and featuring a cast largely made up of asylum seekers themselves, the film tells the moving story of a teenager searching for his path amidst stagnation, trauma, and creative self-liberation. The film confronts its audience uncompromisingly with the harsh reality of life in a refugee camp, while simultaneously unfolding a haunting and surreal artistic beauty that resonates deeply.

XOFTEX, which had its world premiere simultaneously at the Munich Film Festival and the Karlovy Vary Film Festival, captivates with its hypnotic visual language and emotional intensity.

XOFTEX is a production by Arden Film in co-production with The Cup Of Tea, executive producer White Flux Productions, and ZDF/Das kleine Fernsehspiel. The project was supported by HessenFilm, the Medienboard Berlin Brandenburg, the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and Media, the German Federal Film Board, the German Federal Film Fund, and CNC.
